There’s no rest for the wicked teenager! The day after her hit show Modern Family wrapped, Sarah Hyland, who plays angsty teen Haley Dunphy, flew to Vancouver to shoot the Disney Channel movie Geek Charming with off-screen boyfriend Matt Prokop.
“It’s about Dylan Shoenfield, a.k.a. Sarah Hyland, who gets approached by Josh Rosen, a.k.a. Matt Prokop, and he asks her to star in a documentary he’s making for a film festival,” she told Wetpaint of the plotline when we chatted with her at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. “He uses her for his documentary; she uses him to win Blossom Queen at their school.“
Surprise, surprise: They end up romantically involved. “She’s your typical bratty, queen bee, not very nice to anybody and they start to get to know each other and he finds out that she puts on this character and she’s really not that kind of a person,” said Hyland, admitting that it was a relief to temporarily play someone closer to her own personality. “Dylan, in the first part of the movie, is a lot like Haley. So that was really easy to do, but then the Dylan that really is Dylan is a lot like me, so it was nice to be able to relax and play her.”
Not that Sarah finds it hard to find inspiration for her Modern Family character. “If I’m annoyed and tired on set, it doesn’t matter because I look annoyed with my parents,” she laughed. “Haley’s very dramatic. It’s fun to make fun of girls that you knew!”
