A field guide to the fresh young talents you need to know now
Sarah Hyland—The Class Clown (female)
Everyone who has seen Modern Family, a sweet and quirky take on suburban American life, loves it. Each member of the cast stands out on his or her own, but this year, 20-year-old Sarah Hyland separated herself from the pack as the ditzy daughter, Haley Dunphy, carrying a classic breakup episode with her own hilarious brand of tantrums and histrionics. She manages to pack a big comedic punch into the most basic of eye rolls or cell phone conversations, lending the show a small dash of acid humor—we almost hope Haley doesn’t get into college so that Hyland can stick around.
All you Modern Family fanatics out there: How awesome was this past week’s Halloween episode? Mitchell scaling the outside wall of his law firm in a Spider-Man costume…and getting caught by all of his co-workers? Amazing. A thunder, lightening, and fog machine to scare trick-or-treaters? Yup, they had it — and I want it. Gloria punching a scarecrow-clad Mitchell in the face after he startled her? Best scene of the night!
I couldn’t stop gushing about my obsession with this episode to Sarah Hyland (Haley Dunphy), and thankfully she was co-pilot on my best-episode-ever jet.
“It was my favorite episode so far out of the two seasons,” Sarah exclaimed. “I’m a big fan of [Halloween].”
Big fan means awesome costume idea, and Sarah does not disappoint. She and boyfriend Matt Prokop from High School Musical 3 are dressing up as TV couple Michael and Jackie from That ’70s Show.
“We love the show, and people say I look like Mila Kunis,” Sarah says. “I’ve always wanted to be Jackie for Halloween, so we just did it.”
Sarah totally passes for Mila — check out a photo from the show of Jackie and Michael together. We can see Sarah pulling off Vanessa Hudgens too, no? Troy and Gabriella next year?
This weekend Sarah and Matt are headed to a friend’s place to enjoy the Halloween festivities, but Sunday will be all about football for this “stay in rather than go out” couple.
“Sundays we watch football and order in food,” the almost 20-year-old actress shares with me. Their fave team to cheer on? The Dallas Cowboys. Eek! With an injured quarterback and 1-5 record, it’s not looking too good for them.
But hold up a sec. Sarah is a New York native. How’d she end up rooting for a rival?
“I never really had a football team growing up,” Sarah explains. “I actually didn’t really like football growing up because my parents would be just so into it. I thought, ‘They like football more than me.’ That was just me being dramatic as a five-year-old. When I got together with Matt, he was a Cowboys fan. They’re America’s team so it’s okay.”
No need for an introduction, because Sarah Hyland has been on the scene since age five. She has played Howard Stern’s daughter in Private Parts, a young Jackie O on Broadway’s Grey Gardens, and most recently a boy crazed text-a-holic in ABC’s smash hit comedy Modern Family. Here she discusses her burgeoning indie film career, 24-hour Wal-Marts and those unsavory rumors about she and television grandpa Ed O’ Neill.
Tell me about your character on Modern Family.
Haley Dunphy is your regular stereotypical American teenager who is embarrassed by her parents, texts nonstop, and is obsessed with boys.
Are you and Haley alike?
I always have my phone on me even though I’m horrible at texting people back, and I’m not a very good cook. That’s about it when it comes to the similarities between me and Haley. As for our differences, I don’t dress like her at all and I’m too lazy to actually do my hair and makeup.
Do you have any Ed O’Neill stories you can share?
There was a rumor spreading online that me and Ed were having an affair. It was ridiculous because he’s like a grandpa to me. It was really funny and we laugh about it all the time.
You’re on hiatus from Modern Family through August. Are you working on other projects in the interim?
I recently did a couple of indie films. One is called Conception that I shot with my boyfriend (High School Musical 3′s Matt Prokop) as a couple who has sex for the first time. And the other is called Mothers Little Helpers where I play a girl who’s dating a boy who runs an underground escort service for the local mothers in town.

Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland is a rising star on one of the funniest new shows on TV. Sarah – who will next be seen in the upcoming movies Conception and Monster Heroes -gives us the exclusive rundown on where she buys her clothes, shoes and makeup. Here are Sarah’s style-and-beauty picks for …
Hair: “Head and Shoulder and Pantene Pro – I don’t use hair products on my hair other than shampoo and conditioner.”
Face: “Neutrogena makeup remover wipes and that’s it.”
Makeup: “I love Mac concealer, I’m a big concealer person. Tarte bronzer- it has great packaging. Living in New York, there’s limited space for things, and my bronzer would always fall off the counter and break. But Tarte’s packaging is great.”
Jeans: “Wallflower Jeans – they have these amazing jeans that are called jeggings, they are the legging jeans, they are stretchy like leggings but they look like jeans. They are so comfortable. I hate dressing up and I don’t like wearing tight clothes and often the jeans are tight.”
Shirts: “Wifebeaters and tops from Urban Outfitters, BCBG, Free People.”
Shoes: “Steve Madden is pretty awesome because I like really high heels because I’m so short and his shoes are fairly cheap compared to Jimmy Choos.”
Dresses: BCBG
Meanwhile, SJP’s costumer is recoiling: “Sarah chooses Maddens over Choos?!” She’s our kind of girl.
